An unscripted joke by Chris Rock and an unimagined response by Will Smith created big news in the Entertainment world and at the biggest event “The Oscars”. Nobody planned for this to happen.
The 94th Academy award was supposed to be the return of the Glitz and Glamour of Hollywood. But then as the show went on, Chris Rock started roasting Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Will was initially laughing but then after seeing his wife’s reaction he stood up, walked on the stage, and slapped Chris Rock.
Half an hour after the incident took place, Will Smith won the best actor award and even got a standing ovation from all the fraternity.
Pinkett Smith recently had shared her problems related to Alopecia on "Instagram live" and on a show “Table Talk” of which Chris had no idea. Jaden had been vocal about the autoimmune disorder that causes her hair loss.
Long time friend of Chris Rock “Will Packer” who led the production team for the Oscars said in an interview “the LAPD came and needed to talk to Chris, so they came into my office and they were laying out very clearly what Chris rock rights were. They were saying “this is battery, we will go get Will Smith, we’re prepared to get him right now, you can press charges, we can arrest Will Smith”. When the LAPD asked Chris if he would like to take any action, Chris responded , NO!. He further added that Chris's tone was not retaliatory, neither aggressive nor angry. When the Academy were prepared to throw Will Smith out of the theatre, Chris didn’t want that to happen, he didn’t want to make the bad situation worse.” Thus, Smith stayed and the show went on.
As stated by Will Packer “because Chris handled the moment with such grace and aplomb, it allowed the show to continue.” When Smith slapped Rock even Will thought they were playing but when Will started yelling at Rock with such vitriol, he realized it wasn’t planned. Packer was also the first Oscar official Chris spoke to when he came off the stage. When Will Packer asked Chris Rock if Smith really hit him, Chris's reply was “yeah! I just took a punch from Muhammad Ali, but I am fine, and let’s just get past this, I’m getting out of here, I can’t believe this happened!”
The Academy said in a statement on Wednesday that they asked Smith to leave but he refused. But Will Smith has resigned from the academy after 5 days this incident happened and after facing a possible expulsion saying “I betrayed the trust of the academy, I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken!!.”
Chris Rock, who is known for his sharp comic, poking fun at sacred cows and public figures, where Will and Jada Smith were no exception.
Back in 2016, when Chris was hosting the 88th Academy award roasted Pinkett Smith for boycotting the award show over the lack of diverse nominees. Chris said, “Jada Boycott in the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties, I wasn’t invited.”
