Before there were Arijit Singh, Jubin Nautiyal, Atif Aslam, there use to be one name in the Bollywood Music Industry and that was KK. Don’t get surprised he still is a favorite for millions of people out there. His unique voice would make people fall in love with the song and him easily. His voice had the tendency to bring the emotion of people up like make them cry and make them rock. In movies, if Shah Rukh Khan is known as the King of Romance then in the field of Music KK is known as the king of melody. KK’s song in the movie has made the movie evergreen and give huge recognition to many actors.

His full name is KrishnaKumar Kunnath but he is mostly known as KK by billions of people.

KK was born on 23 August 1968, in New Delhi, India, to Hindu-Malayali parents. His father name is C.S. Mennon and mother name is Kunnath Kanakavalli.

Right after completing college, KK got married to his childhood sweetheart Jyothy Kunnath in 1991.

He has also worked as a Marketing Executive for 8 months in the Hotel Industry, where his salary was Rs. 5,000 per month.

KK started his music career through jingles along with his friend Shivani Kashyap ( A jingle is where someone gives voice for the slogans and by singing short songs in the advertisements). He has lent his voice to more than 3000 jingles.

He was only 15 years old when he sang in the first jingle. His income from this jingle was Rs. 5000.

When the music director of that jingle asked him how much is his fee? Then KK had no idea how much  he should charge and just showed his palm, right after that the director gave him the cheque of 5000 Rs, but KK showing his five fingers had only asked for Rs 500.

He didn’t go to any music school. Yes, KK is a self-learned singer. He sharpened his music talent just by listening and singing the songs since he was a kid.

His favorite singer is Kishor Kumar and KK has said,” he learnt to sing by singing and listening to Kishor Kumar songs”. Other musicians who have inspired KK are: Bryan Adams, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, and Led Zeppelin.

KK has given his voice in over 500 Hindi songs and has sang in different languages such as: English, Malayalam, Gujrati, Tamil, Kannada,

KK has also sang for the Pakistani TV show “Tanha Chala” which was aired in 2008 on Hum Tv.

He has also given his voice in many Indian Tv shows like: Just Mohabbat, Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Kuch Jhuki Si Palkhein, Hip Hip Hurray, Just dance, Kavyanjali. The theme song of the Star Pariwar Award 2010 was also Sang by KK along with Shreya Ghosal.

His debut song was ‘Chod aaye Hum who galliyan’ from the movie ‘Maachis’ in the year 1996 where he sang a small part of the song. The beginning two lines ‘Chod aaye hum’ was sang by KK.

Krishna’s career took a huge change when he got to sing the song ‘Tadap tadap is dil se’ from the movie ‘Hum dil de chuke sanam’, which was released on the year 1999 and starred Salman khan, Ajay devgan and Aishwarya Rai Bachhan. This song made him an overnight star.

On the same year, 1999, KK released his first album called “Pal” under the music label Sony Music. The songs of this album are so popular that people still listen to that album till date. The song “Yaaroon’ and ‘Pyaar ke pal’ from this album is still sung by students from school and colleges on their farewell.  Many youngsters consider the song Yaroon and Pyaar ke pal as their friendship anthem.

KK’s favorite song is “Mehebooba” from the movie Sholey. When he was a kid almost everybody who knew KK would request him to sing this song and he would sing it without any hesitation.

Despite singing so may super-hit songs for hundreds of movies, KK hasn’t received so many awards. Shocking right??

He has sung almost 500 Hindi songs and has been nominated in different awards for 16 times only as the best playback singer but you won’t believe KK has only won 1 award to date.

He won the award for:

Khuda jane song form the movie Bachana ye Hasino in the year 2009.

Awards won for the different movie industry:

Eenam swaralaya (Malayalam song) as the best singer of the year award in the year 2012

Best playback singer (Tamil Song) in the year 2005.

On not getting the award KK has said,” I don’t really care about the awards, my focus has not been on the awards and we humans achieve what we put our mind on”.

He doesn’t like the publicity that much and tries to stay away from the limelight. This is also one of the reasons why he has never been in any kind of controversy till his 22 years in the music industry.

Since he doesn’t appear on media that much, KK is not known by many Indians when they see him. But once they listen to his voice the man is no longer unknown.  In an interview, KK said,” People don’t really recognize me when I go to public places, but as soon as they hear my voice everybody knows who I am and the songs I have sang”. 

KK strongly believes that singer's should be recognized by their voice, not by their face.

Since he sang the song “Tu jo Mila” the super-hit song from the movie “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, KK has not sung any new songs.

Singer Arijit Singh and Music Composer Ankit Tiwari has also confessed that their biggest inspiration and best singer has always been KK (Krishna Kumar Kunnath).

It doesn’t matter if KK to date has only won 3 awards but he has definitely won billions of hearts through his singing talent and we hope to see much more songs from the legend KK (Krishna Kumar Kunnath).
